Balance Through Movement for Special Needs Kids

Liz Kantorski and Isabella Dutra

Playing on a gradual rocking board feels like riding on a gentle wave. You can ride by yourself or with a partner or two. You can stand, sit, or lie down on the board, rock back and forth or side-to-side. The motion is playful, soothing, stimulating, regulating, connecting, and joyful—while core muscles, cross lateral connections, and balance are engaged, activated, and strengthened.

Open and instruction playtime includes exploring and experiencing  a variety of rocking boards and other interactive movement tools as well as a series of playful poses, exercises, and movement games, accompanied by music. A wind-down time includes sharing together. In the last class, children with their caregiver, will assemble and color a simple wooden rocking board of their very own to take home.

Appropriate for children ages three to five years old. A parent, grandparent, or caregiver must accompany and participate with their child.
