Intro to Cupping

Ninetta Keenan, AOBTA CP, LMT

Cupping therapy has been a popular form of medicine for centuries, especially in the Eastern regions of the world. Cupping creates a vacuum to draw out impurities and stagnation and mobilizes the blood and other body fluids to help repair tissues. This action helps alleviate chronic conditions and restore healthy function.

Traditional cupping methods utilize glass or bamboo cups and introduce fire to create suction, but the development of modern materials has made it possible to use cups made of silicone. These cups are pliable, versatile, and unbreakable making your work seem almost effortless. Suction is created simply by squeezing the cup and placing on the skin.

Silicone cups are effective in repairing and remodeling the fascia by removing congestion which causes pain and limited range of motion. They are a natural extension of the therapist's hands and are most often used with oils or lotions to glide over bare skin, making it a natural choice for massage therapists.

Silicone cups may also be used in place of glass or plastic cups without the use of oils or lotions if the stationary method of cupping is employed. The flexibility of silicone enables these cups to work well in the contoured areas of the body such as ankles, knees, and wrists.

Become informed about the history of cupping, explore the different types of cups, and focus on the use of silicone cups. Experience cupping techniques and protocols that address the common cold, internal disorders, and soft tissue dysfunction of the neck, shoulders, and back. Intended for people who are new to cupping or those who need a refresher.

You may either bring or purchase a set of silicone cups that includes at least four cups of differing sizes. The sets for sale at Infinity contain four cups in diameters of 1.2,” 1.7," 2.0," 2.5.”  6 CEUs are available for licensed massage therapists for NCBTMC through Zen Shiatsu Chicago.
